Using Reverb on a Whole Mix
July 24th, 2006
I came across a great technique recently for giving a mix a nice live “band playing in a room” feel.
It would not be appropriate for very mix but it could be very useful. The basic idea is to mix without using reverb on the individual elements and then applying a side chain reverb to the entire mix at the end.
This way you would not put any reverb on the low frequencies (this would make things to indistinct). I have tried it out and found it produces some really nice results. From about 500hz upwards seems to to work well.
The trick as with all effects is to keep it subtle but this could really be helpful to pull together a disjointed mix and give it a band feel.
